Montauk Blackfish Fishing

The Hottest Montauk Blackfish Fishing Spots

Early spring and fall are the ideal times to fish for blackfish or what the Narragansett tribe call tautog. Blackfish are usually found in the range of 15 to 70 feet below the surface and as close as three miles from the inlet depending on water temperature and time of year. Sometimes they could be found as deep as 120 feet below the surface and 20 miles from the inlet. The usual fishing spots are north toward Fisher’s Island, northeast to the highway, south towards Cartwright, south of Block Island, or on the southwest ledge. No matter the spot, you can be sure that the Susie E II can take you where the elusive blackfish can be caught.

Montauk Blackfish Charters

Fishing for blackfish is done by putting a weighted line down to the bottom with live hermit, green or white crabs as bait. A Montauk blackfish can weigh anywhere from a couple of pounds to 15 pounds plus. Reeling in a blackfish can be a real challenge because its first instinct upon realizing it’s been caught is to swim into the rocky bottom in an effort to break the line. Even the smallest of blackfish can escape in a matter of seconds if you’re not on your toes.
