Recreational and sport fisherman consider Montauk tuna fishing to be the best on the east coast because of the number of tuna species that thrive in Montauk’s offshore waters. Bluefin, yellowfin, albacore, and bigeye tuna are just some of the species found in the waters surrounding Montauk.

Montauk Tuna Fishing: Bluefin

Bluefin tuna are caught closer to shore with the first fish showing up around the first week of July. During Montauk tuna fishing trips onboard the Susie E II, we catch them on the troll early in the season but then switch over to bait chunking late in the summer and through the fall. Giant bluefins that reach over 1,000 pounds show up in September and stay around as long as the bait is in the area.

Tuna Fishing Charters on the Susie E II

Recreational and sport fisherman consider Montauk tuna fishing to be the best on the East Coast

The yellowfin, albacore, and bigeye tuna are offshore fish staying in the warmer waters of the canyons. There, fish sometimes move in closer when warm-core eddies break off the Gulf Stream and push the warm water inshore. On Montauk tuna fishing trips, these species are caught by trolling a variety of lures and bait during the day and by chunking during the night. This can lead to some of the most exciting and furious bites from fish in a feeding frenzy all around the boat. Hand feeding bait to tuna is an awesome experience. On these overnight Montauk tuna fishing trips, these kinds of tuna have become more abundant over the last few seasons.

Montauk Offshore Fishing: Blue Marlin, Wahoo, Mahi-Mahi

During the day, other pelagic species are often caught on the troll. Blue marlin and White Marlin are not uncommon of a catch. In addition anglers often catch the occasional Wahoo, which is one of the best tasting offshore fish.

Mahi-mahi are caught on the troll along with the other fish. We are also always on the lookout for floating debris and weedlines, which attract these tasty game fish. In late summer, the mahi-mahi off Montauk can be plentiful around any offshore structure and we often catch them on our Montauk tuna fishing trips.
